We wanted to produce high-quality grappas, and that meant making choices. We chose to work with raw materials from our own territory and to respect the natural rhythm of time, without forcing it.
Being a small artisanal distillery has allowed us to follow certain principles — such as working only with pomace that comes from local wineries, and doing so in harmony with the rhythm of the seasons, and the harvest times of each grape variety.
We’ve chosen to stay small and artisanal — to do things right, and to craft truly good grappa.
1885
The first to begin was great-grandfather Francesco, back in the distant years between 1880 and 1885 — a pioneer who passed down his craft and secrets to grandfather Pietro.
1948
Grandfather Pietro moved the business from the province of Treviso to that of Verona, establishing the distillery in Monteforte d’Alpone, the town where it is still located today.
The post–World War II period
Francesco and Giuseppe, guided by Pietro’s experience, continuously refined the art of distillation, developing their own market in the province of Verona and throughout the Veneto region — a market based almost exclusively on the distribution of Venetian grappa to the multitude of small grocery stores that existed at the time.
The 1980s
Little by little, the market changed, and so Francesco and Giuseppe began distilling pomace from selected grape varieties only — such as Amarone, Valpolicella, Soave, Recioto di Soave, and Chardonnay — thus obtaining higher-quality spirits, the so-called single-varietal grappas.
1984
The way grappa is presented has also changed over time, and the MASCHIO PIETRO distillery has embraced this trend by creating a whole range of new bottles, both in traditional glass and in blown glass.
1993
Little by little, the sons of Francesco and Giuseppe also joined the company — first Stefano, then Enrico and Roberto, and finally Fabio — thus marking the third generational transition.
2010
Keeping up with the times, Maschio started barrel aging, launching riserva grappas and other premium selections.
We praise slowness; we follow the rhythms set by nature — the timing of the fresh pomace harvest, and the pace of traditional distillation methods..
A small amount of pomace, sourced from small DOC producers, which — through interpretation rather than automation — is transformed each new season into superior quality grappas.
The MASCHIO PIETRO distillery is based in Monteforte d’Alpone, a medium-sized town located precisely where the hills of eastern Lessinia rise from the Venetian plain.
The area in question is therefore a region with a strong winemaking vocation. Monteforte d’Alpone and its entire territory are part of the wine and cultural route known as the Soave Wine Road.
A short distance from Monteforte d’Alpone lies Valpolicella, another region with a strong winemaking tradition, known for producing the wine of the same name — Valpolicella — and the renowned Amarone.
